The stars don’t decide for you. They offer you a map.

There is an astrology older than the one you know. In India they call it Jyotish, the “science of light”: it does not stop at character, but reads the course of a whole life, with the sidereal zodiac, the 27 lunar mansions and the great cycles of the planets.

Twenty-seven mansions in the sky. In one of them, your Moon sleeps.

Before the twelve signs, in India people looked to the Moon. Its journey across the sky is divided into twenty-seven mansions, the Nakshatra: the oldest layer of Vedic astrology, the one on which the signs later came to rest. That is why three people with the Moon in the same sign can be so little alike: they live in different mansions.

Every chart has a second court. That is where the promise ripens.

The birth chart tells what the sky promises. A second chart, the Navamsha, tells what becomes of it over the years: it is the court of the harvest, where an exalted planet can step down and a fallen one can rise to the throne. This third volume lines up the three tools that turn a reading into a craft: the second chart, the Yoga — the sentences the planets speak together — and Shadbala, strength measured, with its threshold.

“When?” Sooner or later it comes up, in every reading.

The birth chart is the boat, with its shape and its capacity. The Dasha periods are the sailing seasons, which decide what is caught and when; the transits are the day’s weather, which decides whether you go out today. This fourth volume teaches you to read them together, with the classical tools of Jyotish, and to test every prediction with a single rule: you write it down beforehand, with the date at the top.

Jyotish is practised with the person, not on the person.

Knowing how to read a chart is only the beginning. Then comes the day when someone hands you their date of birth and asks: what do you see in it? This fifth volume is about that moment: how to prepare, how to speak, what to write down and what to leave unsaid. It is the workshop volume: a method of consultation told like a table being laid, before, during and after the reading.

The sky passes over everyone, but each of us receives it in our own house.

Fifteen centuries ago Varahamihira read the sky for kings. This sixth volume opens the third branch of Jyotish, Medini Jyotish, the astrology of the world, and carries it into real history: the two World Wars, the building of Europe, the Wall, the years we are living through now. With a method that does not scare easily: every parallel set beside its counterexamples, counted, and every rule put to the test before it is believed.

The sky and the sea are the same book.

Fifteen centuries ago Varahamihira devoted twenty chapters of the Brihat Samhita to rain, to the winds and to the signs of the sky, and he measured the rain with a vessel one cubit wide: an astrologer who measured before he believed. This seventh volume reads the sky of the weather with him, mansion by mansion and day by day, and puts his rules to the test against real rain: a hundred and twenty-five years of measured rainfall and seventy-six years of weather data, every rule written down before looking at the data and entered in a register even when it does not hold.
